Are we Salty?

Here is a link to the video we watched tonight: The Bible is dangerous, but are you?

In this video Francis Chan, who has a real passion for Jesus and his Word, wants to know what kind of salt you are?

Matthew 5:13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled underfoot.”

What does this salt metaphor?

In Chan’s salt illustration, what did the large pile of useless salt represent?

The Pharasees “had”  HUGE piles of useless salt.  They did tons of “religious” stuff, where their heart wasn’t connected to what their hands and their mouths were doing.  What are some similarities between what Pharisees did, and what we as followers of Jesus do today?

Focus in on these three things.  Going to Church, reading God’s Word, and prayer.  How did the Pharisees do these things? (Check Matt 5:5 to see how the Pharisees prayed).  How are we like Pharisees when we do these things?

Sometimes we get stuck in cruise control, where driving, but we don’t really know what we are driving past, or where we are at on the map.  Christian cruise control is when we are going through the motions, but our heart isn’t connected to what we are doing.

Last week we talked about Olympians, and what it takes for them to reach their goal.  We compared this to the life of a person following Jesus.  One thing that was mentioned was reading your Bible.  This is true, but we can’t just read it, we have to ENGAGE it.  We have to actually think about what it is asking for us to do, and DO IT.

So What?

Look up and read this one verse in Matthew, 19:21.  Now, don’t just read it.  DO what it says!  A lot of us are working on the 30 Hour Famine.  We are asking people to help us meet our goals to save lives. But how are we personally going to do that?  Engage God’s Word… I dare you!  Let me know what that looks like in the comments.

Wouldn’t you feel weird, if the world ended tomorrow, and we had all this stuff that just didn’t matter anymore… but we could have used it to save a few lives in Haiti?

(This whole lesson online thing is new, so if you there is something you don’t like, or if there is something else you’d like to have, let me know!)
