ServeSundays – Starting October 2nd

ServeSundays

We’re starting something new.  Starting October 2nd, Sunday mornings will be about Connecting and Serving.  These are two of our four core values, and I’m excited for this transformation on Sundays.  ServeSundays are all about allow our youth to be involved in the life of the church outside the “walls” of the Youth Ministry.  We have two services on Sunday, and we want our youth to attend one, and serve during the other one.  We have LOTS of “positions” available, but there is also some freedom in creating new avenues of service.  It might be easiest to associate this program with an internship.  We’ll help get our youth plugged-in, provide training and feedback, encouragement, and evaluations.  That last line sounds pretty serious, that’s because we want to be intentional about training our youth.

Why the change?

Great question, a lot of people are asking it.  Our changes are rooted in evaluations of our ministry, and youth culture research.  There are three key issues that we are aiming at:  80% of youth leave their faith after high school, authentic relationships are a prerequisit for developing lasting transformation, and we’ve outsourced spiritual formation and christian education to professionals, leaving our homes out of the picture.  ServeSundays allow our youth to pursue using their gifts, skills, and talents within the Church.  This will help to establish a life-long habit of service.

Thriving Lesson Follow-up – 9/14/11

reach card image

Dear Thriving-Parents,

We kicked off a new five-week study this week to help our teenagers understand God’s purposes for life. The first lesson, called “Reaching Out to Your Friends,” focuses on helping students understand that we are created in God’s image, and have the ability to reflect God’s love. Our prayer is that each teenager will commit to a life of representing God’s love to all people, regardless of their race, gender, skills, or popularity.

Sometime this week, maybe around the dinner table or in the car, consider asking these questions to generate some discussion with your teenager about reaching others:

  • How active are we as a family in reaching out to others? Do we as a family embrace God’s purposes for life, or is it something we need to work on?
  • What are some ways you have tried to reach out to your friends?
  • How can we as parents help you to reach out to your friends (prayer, use the house for gatherings, rides, and so on)?

Research shows that the most effect way for spiritual transformation to happen, is through parents honestly sharing about their own relationship with God.  This isn’t something that the previous generation did, and so it might be tough.  Let me know if you’d like some help thinking through ways to do this.

As always, let me know if there are specific ways I can pray for your family or for your teenager. Have a blessed week!

We’re baaaaaack!

 BIG CHANGES

Big changes are happening over the summer, with big benefits.  I hope your summer has been both eventful and relaxing.  Things have been busy at the church with both our physical construction as well as our “construction” within the youth ministry.  We are incredibly excited about the 2011-2012 school year, and can’t wait to get started with our new plans.

I want to give you a glimpse into what is keeping myself and the rest of the youth ministry leadership busy so far this summer:

  • The entire youth ministry framework at Santa Clara is under construction.  As our church is in the process of clarifying our vision, so is the youth ministry.  We are reworking everything to fit in with the greater vision of Santa Clara’s four core values:  Connect, Grow, Serve, and Go.  I’ll take you through a closer look as to what this will look like between now and September, but it is definitely something to get excited about!
  • There are several parts of this new framework that we are concentrating on as we prepare to launch in September:
    • Relationships are a HUGE part of our new framework, and so we need a lot more leaders than we have in the past.  We are in the process of recruiting and equipping new leaders.
    • We are also transitioning into a new curricular framework, one that will enable us to have a great long-term vision for Spiritual Transformation.  Our new curriculum will enable us to move our students towards a deeper relationship with God and one another.

A NOTICEABLE LULL

Our summer schedule looks different.  This is purposefully planned to allow us to be under construction.  We still have a lot going on over the summer, but working toward all of the changes for the 2011-2012 school year takes a lot of work!

One exciting opportunity we have coming up soon is to help a local low-income apartment complex build community through a carnival.  More Info.

There are several events coming up, but the details aren’t completely ironed out:  Awesomedumb Multi-Church All Nighter, Hello 6th Grader’s Party, Area-Wide Youth Ministry School Year Kick-Off Night of Prayer and Worship (AWYMS

HOW WE COMMUNICATE

We are constantly striving to communicate better.  Everyone communicates in different ways these days, so I want to provide some clarity on how best to stay connected with what’s happening within the youth ministry.

Everything starts with our website.  I’ll post everything there before it goes out through email, Facebook, and Twitter.  You have the option of utilizing any of these mediums, and if these don’t work for you, I always welcome feedback.  Learn more about how we communicate.

Forgotten God

For the next 7 weeks (which takes us into the summer), we will be trying to figure out who the Holy Spirit is, and what that means for our lives.  We will be using Francis Chan’s Forgotten God video series to help us with our discussion.  Check out this video to learn a little more.
